About this role:
We’re looking for a backend engineer to help build and operate the infrastructure behind our discovery experience. The ideal candidate is excited to solve high-scale indexing and retrieval challenges. Experience with machine learning is a plus, as we increasingly integrate dense embeddings and hybrid search strategies into our stack.
What you’ll do :
- Guide a small team (1-3 engineers) as you architect, build, and maintain high-scale ingestion and indexing pipelines for structured and unstructured data.
- Own and evolve our indexing and retrieval search stack, from Elasticsearch clusters to vector databases such as Milvus, Pinecone, and Qdrant.
- Collaborate with data science and ML partners to weave new signals and embeddings into the index.
- Design and tune retrieval APIs that return lightning-fast, highly relevant results.
- Push performance boundaries, boosting latency, throughput, and reliability across the discovery serving layer.
- Advance hybrid retrieval, blending keyword and semantic techniques for the best of both worlds.
Qualifications:
- Experience with search indexing and retrieval technologies such as Elasticsearch or Solr.
- Proficiency in backend languages such as Kotlin, Java, Go, or Python
- Experience building distributed systems, backend services, or infrastructure
- Familiarity with backend APIs and large-scale data pipelines
- Experience with frontend development is a bonus
- Interest in search infrastructure, ML-powered discovery, or large-scale information retrieval
Salary range:
Canada: the pay range for this role is $156,000 - $195,000 per year.
This role will also be eligible for equity and benefits. Actual base pay will be determined based on permissible factors such as transferable skills, work experience, market demands, and primary work location. The base pay range provided is subject to change and may be modified in the future.
Effective January 2025, Faire employees will be expected to go into the office 2 days per week on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Additionally, hybrid in-office roles will have the flexibility to work remotely up to 4 weeks per year. Specific Workplace and Information Technology positions may require onsite attendance 5 days per week as will be indicated in the job posting.
