Ericsson, a telecommunications innovator headquartered in Sweden, announced its plans to invest CAD $630 million into its Canadian operations. The investment, equivalent to about $453 million, will go toward enhancing research and development at Ericsson’s Ottawa and Montreal facilities.
The company equips service providers and enterprises with mobile communication and connectivity solutions. In collaboration with the Government of Canada, Ericsson will focus on developing sustainable network technologies. Having operated in Canada for seven decades, Ericsson is deepening its commitment to network sustainability through partnerships with Environment and Climate Change Canada and institutions such as Concordia University.
Across Ericsson’s R&D centers in Montreal and Ottawa, the company develops quantum communications and AI-powered network management solutions. These centers also work to expand the company’s cloud RAN, 5G advanced and 6G capabilities. The fresh funding will fuel hiring and create hundreds of jobs at these facilities as the company works to build next-gen network technologies.
“Canada is a leader in many important fields including AI, quantum and advanced mobile network research, and Ericsson’s world-class R&D facilities in Ottawa and Montreal are at the heart of our global innovation efforts.” Börje Ekholm, president and CEO of Ericsson, said in a statement. “ Our vision is to leverage open, mobile connectivity to drive positive impact for enterprises and society, accelerate digital transformation and support a low-carbon future and this investment will address all these areas.”
The capital will also help Ericsson grow its partnerships with over 20 Canadian academic institutions as it works to uncover how technology like AI can help achieve climate action goals.
