About AVERI:

The AI Verification and Evaluation Research Institute (AVERI) is a US-based nonprofit with the mission to make third-party auditing of frontier AI effective and universal. AVERI aims to bring about a world in which the most powerful AI systems – and the companies that build them – are rigorously audited for safety and security by third parties. We believe this independent auditing layer is essential for enabling confident deployment of AI and managing critical risks from this increasingly powerful technology.

About the Role:

We’re hiring an Audit Manager to lead delivery of AVERI’s pilot audits. You will run each project from kickoff to final report (scoping, evidence requests, interviews, analysis and drafting) while managing timelines, risks and relationships with the organization being audited. This role will report to the Audit Director, who is yet to be hired. Given AVERI’s early stage (launched in January ‘26), staff are expected to take on a wide range of responsibilities, many of which will eventually be transitioned to more specialized personnel. Applications will be reviewed on a rolling basis, with an anticipated application deadline of November 30th, 2026.

This is a fully remote position with a preference for candidates in the California Bay area.

What You’ll Do:

  • Lead pilot audit projects end to end: scope the work with the audited organization, build the project plan, coordinate AVERI staff and contracted specialists contributing to each audit, track milestones and blockers, keep stakeholders informed, manage delivery risks, and ensure projects are run smoothly and meet high standards of quality and professionalism

  • Conduct audit fieldwork on safety and security claims: develop analytical frameworks, assess documentation and evidence, conduct interviews, and judge whether the evidence supports the claims made

  • Draft and co-author audit reports and findings that are precise, well supported, and defensible

  • Coordinate logistics with audited organizations, including information requests, access arrangements, confidentiality protocols, conflicts of interest and scheduling

  • Work with the Standards Director to test and refine AVERI's audit methodology and internal processes based on lessons from each pilot

About you:

  • You have either:

    • 3+ years of experience in audit, assurance, risk advisory or consulting, including leading projects or workstreams (e.g., technology risk or IT audit, SOC 2 or ISO 27001/42001 assessments, or management consulting; or

    • 3+ years of experience working in frontier AI evaluations, leading projects or workstreams (e.g. external testing and evaluation work at an AI lab or evaluation organization, verifying developer claims, running benchmarks, red teaming, capability elicitation, safeguard or effectiveness testing).

  • Familiarity with frontier AI systems and the AI evaluations landscape: you can read a system card or frontier safety framework and judge to what extent the evidence supports what it claims. Demonstrated ability to get up to speed quickly in new and evolving technical domains

  • A track record of delivering third-party or client work to a deadline and a high quality bar

  • If you background is in exposure to audit, assurance, compliance, or risk work (e.g., SOC 2, ISO, financial audit) is a strong plus

  • Excellent written communication: you can turn messy inputs into clear, precise, well-organized documents

  • High integrity and discretion, including with confidential and commercially sensitive information. Sound judgment on sensitive topics

What we offer:

  • This is a full-time remote position which will require travel at least twice per quarter and possibly significantly more, especially to Washington, DC and San Francisco

  • Salary range: $150,000-260,000 USD

  • Comprehensive medical benefits, including eligible HRA expenses

  • 6% unrestricted retirement contribution

  • Unlimited PTO

  • A small, mission-driven team committed to integrity and purpose, providing a supportive environment with meaningful opportunities for career growth
