The Role

Job Overview
Applied Systems, Inc., a worldwide leader in insurance technology, is currently searching for a Cloud Architect to join our team. In this role you will be responsible for overseeing the Applied corporate cloud strategy within the Corporate IT team. The Cloud Architect must also effectively communicate and collaborate with internal stakeholders to create optimal public cloud environments and configurations for Applied.
What You'll Do

  • Drive adoption of public cloud technologies
  • Develop and enhance the Applied public cloud architecture, including application standards, management of data, identity and access solutions, and performance
  • Develop and implement monitoring technologies such as DataDog to ensure optimal uptime metrics and ease troubleshooting of production issues
  • Construct and maintain documented standards for implementing and configuring Applied Cloud infrastructure
  • Self-starter with in-depth hands-on experience with large-scale implementations of Azure and/or GCP
  • Ability to work after hours and on weekends when required and/or necessary
  • Continuously analyze infrastructure to determine effectiveness and inefficiencies and make written recommendations for improvements
  • Define and implement best practices to support disaster recovery of the Applied infrastructure
  • Create and maintain accurate and reusable implementation, testing, and any other related IT documentation used for change or configuration process management
  • Manage and maintain Infrastructure as Code (IaC) in GCP, AWS, and Azure using IaaS models
  • Work with vendors and other third-party teams to evaluate their products and services
  • Maintain the design, implementation, and operational documentation used to provide guidance to other team members
  • Identify, communicate and help to implement improvements in the work process for customers and peers
  • Assist in analyzing internal production or development problems to determine hardware or software malfunctions and make recommendations
  • Test and evaluate various equipment, systems, and procedures for use in the Applied Cloud environments
  • Be engaged with Cloud Services, Corporate IT, and other inter-office teams for the purposes of support escalation, rapid response problem resolution, solution collaboration and overall, ensuring that the Applied Cloud exhibits the highest level of performance, stability, availability, security and data integrity
  • Stays abreast of changes in Applied Systems' software, technology and the industry by participation in continuing education
  • Continuously look for ways to improve the performance, availability and security of the Applied Cloud
  • Utilize CDKTF, Terraform, HCL, and Typescript code to write/code for IaC, Terraform modules, and enhance functionality utilizing a CI/CD pipeline as requested
  • Check code, scripts, modules, etc. into GitLab and maintain as required
  • Create, deploy, and approve IaC/Application GitLab merge requests as required
  • Participate in team meetings and maintain open and continuous communication with your peers and leadership on your areas of responsibility
  • Provide mentoring to Engineer roles on the team
  • Manage projects with minimal supervision for internal and external stakeholders


What You'll Need to Succeed

  • Your experience should include:
  • 5+ years directly related work experience and/or an equivalent combination
  • Ability to design and troubleshoot enterprise architectures that include Azure, GCP, GKE, GCS, IaaS, IaC
  • Strong foundation in server, storage, and performance monitoring and troubleshooting
  • Understanding of core IT system technologies and public cloud platforms
  • The ability to handle many high priority and complex task/projects simultaneously
  • The ability to work with deadlines and complete work in a timely manner
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills
  • Strong technical product and environment understanding
  • Excellent organization skills and keen attention to detail
  • The ability to analyze and to prioritize complex situations and risks
  • Associates or Bachelor's Degree plus some specialized training

  • Additionally you may have:
  • Perform Terraform scripting, Azure (preferred), GCP, and/or AWS public cloud platform experience
  • Program leadership, Communication, Collaboration, thought leadership, change management, application architecture, orchestration, governance, security, and finance (costing optimizations)
  • Microsoft Azure, Kubernetes, and PostgreSQL experience
  • Experience with Apigee API, Hashicorp Vault, Istio, ArgoCD, DataDog, CDKTF coding, HCL coding, Terraform coding, GitLab source repository experience, Jira Kanban/Agile, Confluence, DataDog monitoring, Helm charts, GCP GLB with Cloud Armor, Networking, SSL/TLS/Cipher/Certificates, and Bash scripting
  • Certifications like: Google Professional Cloud Architect, AWS Certified Solutions Architect, Arcitura Certified Cloud Architect, IBM Certified Solution Architect, or Microsoft Certified Azure Solutions Architect Expert
