As the Controller, you are a member of the FreeBalance international accounting and finance (A&F) team, responsible for the quality and timeliness of international financial reporting for the FreeBalance group of companies, directly supporting the Director of Finance. You will be responsible for the quality and timely completion of all financial transactions worldwide at a detailed level to support local, regional and worldwide financial reporting to all stakeholders. This position must meet tight deadlines across multiple complex projects, in numerous countries, in various subsidiaries with different base currencies and reporting obligations, within a consolidated matrixed reporting organization.


This is a full-time position based in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada.

Main Responsibilities:

  • Responsible for overseeing and participating in the timeliness and quality of financial data entry from the accounting team. Participate and lead in project, local, regional and worldwide reporting to meet strict deadlines. 
  • Responsible to oversee and approve financial entries worldwide including accounts payable, expense management, general accounting, accruals, transfer pricing application, etc. to meet project, local, regional and corporate reporting standards.
  • Prepare and support preparation of FreeBalance consolidated and regional financial statements and reports in accordance with company standards. 
  • Act as lead accountant for preparation of specific regional and local financial statements as assigned. This may include accounts payable, general accruals, general accounting, monthly reconciliations and financial statement preparation.
  • Act as lead and subject matter expert for preparation of complex financial transactions including international labor allocation.
  • In conjunction with other international A&F team member, oversee and perform detailed financial analysis of worldwide expenses to ensure maximum accuracy.
  • Approve all detailed monthly reconciliations of balance sheet schedules for multiple subsidiaries in multiple currencies.
  • Participate in local audits, and consolidated company audit.
  • Support VPs in all regional and project financial matters. Respond to inquiries regarding financial results and special reporting requests.
  • Generally support Director of Finance to ensure FreeBalance meets all reporting, tax and audit obligations worldwide, including project, local, regional and consolidated reporting.
  • Monitor and analyze activities to develop more efficient procedures and use of resources while maintaining a high level of accuracy.
  • Assist in the development, implementation, maintenance of new business processes and accounting principles, considering the variety of international rules and regulations under which we operate, to increase effectiveness and efficiencies in the international finance team.
  • Act as lead accountant for specific assigned projects. This may include supporting project managers for resource planning, financial analysis and processing of contracts, invoice generation and management, preparation of project profit & loss statements, etc.

Qualifications:

  • Minimum University degree in Business, Commerce or Accounting. 
  • Financial Designation such as CPA, CMA, CGA, CA, or equivalent is considered an asset.
  • Minimum 5 years advanced accounting, preferably in software industry.
  • Minimum 2 years of controller / senior accounting position with evidence of leadership over financial reconciliation and statement production.
  • Tax knowledge in one or multiple countries is considered an asset.
  • Highly motivated person, with strong analytical skills with multi-tasking abilities.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills in English.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills in Spanish considered an asset.
  • Experience with a variety of ERP financial systems.
