Job Description

Intermediate Electrical Traffic Signal Designer supports the planning, design, and delivery of traffic signal and roadway electrical infrastructure projects in Ottawa, ON, Canada. The role contributes to multidisciplinary project teams by preparing engineering drawings, technical specifications, design calculations, and project documentation in accordance with municipal, provincial, and transportation authority requirements.

The position is involved throughout project development and detailed design phases, supporting the integration of traffic signal systems within broader infrastructure projects. Responsibilities include coordination with engineering disciplines, participation in field reviews, design quality verification, and technical reporting while maintaining compliance with applicable electrical and transportation standards.

The ideal candidate possesses 3-5+ years of experience in traffic signal and electrical design, including direct exposure to transportation infrastructure projects, regulatory compliance requirements, and engineering design software used for roadway and municipal environments.

Jon Description

  • Prepare and develop traffic signal design documentation, engineering drawings, specifications, and technical reports for infrastructure projects.
  • Perform electrical design activities related to traffic signal installations and roadway infrastructure systems.
  • Coordinate with multidisciplinary teams to ensure effective system integration across transportation and infrastructure projects.
  • Conduct design reviews and support quality assurance activities to maintain compliance with applicable standards and project requirements.
  • Participate in project coordination meetings and provide technical input during project delivery and stakeholder discussions.
  • Support field reviews and inspections to verify design implementation and identify construction-related issues.
  • Contribute to technical reporting and engineering documentation throughout project development and delivery phases.
  • Provide technical guidance to junior team members and support knowledge-sharing within the electrical design team.
  • Review and assist in the development of engineering standards, templates, and procedures for continuous improvement initiatives.
  • Ensure adherence to regulatory compliance requirements, municipal standards, transportation standards, and industry best practices.

Qualifications

Required

  • Bachelor's Degree in Electrical Engineering or Civil Engineering, or College Diploma in Electrical Engineering Technology.
  • Minimum 3-5+ years of progressive experience in traffic signal, roadway, and electrical design.
  • Minimum 3 years of direct traffic signal design experience.
  • Strong knowledge of the Canadian Electrical Code (CEC).
  • Experience applying OTM Book 12, OPSD, and OPSS standards.
  • Proficiency with AutoCAD and Civil 3D.
  • Experience preparing engineering drawings, specifications, and technical documentation for infrastructure projects.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills for multidisciplinary collaboration and client interaction.
  • Demonstrated ability to support project delivery, design coordination, and technical problem-solving activities.

Assets

  • Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) designation in good standing with a Canadian engineering regulator.
  • Experience with sustainability initiatives and energy-efficient electrical design practices.
  • Previous exposure to municipal transportation infrastructure projects.
  • Experience mentoring junior engineers, designers, or technical staff.
  • Familiarity with transportation authority approval processes and stakeholder coordination.
