Fidus is a global high-tech design firm headquartered in Ottawa, with additional design centres in Kitchener-Waterloo and San Jose. We specialize in leading-edge electronic product development, with hardware, embedded software, FPGA/ASIC, and signal integrity teams working together to design and deliver next-generation products for clients in emerging technology markets.
Position Overview/Mandate:
The Electronics Technologist supports the development, bring-up, and testing of electronic systems at Fidus. Working closely with engineering teams, you will assemble, debug, and validate hardware, while helping maintain a well-organized, safe, and efficient lab environment.
This role combines hands-on technical work with lab operations, including inventory management, equipment maintenance, and supporting prototype builds and testing activities. You will contribute across the product lifecycle and play a key role in ensuring hardware is ready for development and validation.
This position is ideal for someone who enjoys working with hardware, is detail-oriented, and thrives in a collaborative, fast-paced environment.
What You’ll Be Doing:
- Provide support to the engineers and technologist in the lab during board bring-up and testing.
- Assembling, testing, and programming on all Fidus products and prototypes.
- Coordinate the calibration and repairs of test equipment.
- Organize and maintain the inventory counts for all products and subassemblies in the lab.
- Under the guidance of a senior designer or technologist, debugging and solving circuit failures.
- Performing all aspects related to packing and shipping products and prototypes.
- Using Fidus internal processes and systems to manage components and builds, and assist with equipment and parts procurement as required.
- Repair and assembly of fine-pitch electronics, including coordinating with external repair vendors for complex component replacements
- Support engineering teams in taking measurements in the lab as required.
- Maintaining the lab so that it is organized, safe, and clean, including sorting, cleaning, and organizing materials and equipment.
- Other activities as required.
Who You are:
- 0–5 years of relevant experience in electronics, hardware, or lab environments, with a technical degree from a college or university, or equivalent experience. New graduates willing to go the extra mile to learn and contribute will be considered.
- Demonstrated hardware-related skills and the ability to maintain lab hardware.
- Proficiency in soldering fine-pitch components, or the eagerness to learn this skill quickly.
- Familiarity with mechanical assembly, electronic assembly, and quality standards.
- Be highly organized and able to create systems that keep the lab, equipment, inventory, and builds organized and safe.
- Self motivated with the ability to work with minimal supervision.
- Energetic individual with a positive approach toward supporting the electronics lab regardless of the complexity of the task.
- Effective communicator, with the ability to generate reports and test plans using Microsoft Office
- Strong teamwork skills and the ability to work as part of a larger design team.
- Familiarity with reading and interpreting schematics as required.
- Experience with lab equipment including oscilloscopes, multi-meters, electronic loads, and power supplies.
- Physical ability to lift up to 25 kg and move equipment, with regular requirements to bend, crouch, lift, push, and pull.
