Fellow is the AI meeting assistant that helps teams turn conversations into decisions and action, built from the ground up with privacy and security in mind.

Recording is one of the most foundational parts of the Fellow experience, and one of the most technically complex. Our recording platform spans desktop, mobile, real-time media systems, and third-party meeting platforms, working across an enormous range of devices, operating systems, networks, permissions, and meeting configurations. The team’s job is to make all of that complexity feel effortless, creating a dependable foundation for everything Fellow helps people do before, during, and after a meeting.

We are looking for a hands-on Engineering Manager to lead and grow the team responsible for this platform. You will help a strong existing team reach its next level, raise the bar for operational excellence, and shape the next generation of Fellow’s recording capabilities.

This is a true player-coach role. You will manage and develop engineers, set technical direction, and stay close enough to the work to write code, jump into a tricky production issue, and explore promising ideas alongside the team.

What you will own

  • Lead and grow the existing team responsible for Fellow’s desktop application, botless recording experience, mobile recording, and real-time audio and video infrastructure.
  • Coach and develop engineers working across these platforms, grow the team with the expertise it needs next, and ensure knowledge and ownership are shared broadly.
  • Make reliability a competitive advantage by improving observability, tooling, incident response, and the systems and practices required to operate the platform at scale.
  • Stay close to people using Fellow and to our support teams, using real-world feedback to guide the team’s priorities.
  • Stay technically hands-on by writing production code where it creates leverage, pairing on difficult bugs and prototypes, and remaining close to the architecture and risks within the systems your team owns.
  • Set the standard for how the team uses AI coding tools, modelling effective workflows and continually exploring ways to build faster without compromising production quality.
  • Partner with Product, Design, SRE, and other engineering leaders to turn ambiguous opportunities into clear priorities and measurable outcomes.
  • Balance ambitious user-facing work with the platform investments that make future development faster, safer, and more reliable.
  • Help shape what comes next, including deeper operating-system integrations, new recording environments, native mobile capabilities, and on-device intelligence.

Success means helping an established team grow its capabilities and impact, shipping ambitious new experiences, and creating a recording platform people can trust.

What we are looking for

  • 7+ years of software engineering experience.
  • 2+ years of experience managing software engineers.
  • A genuine desire to remain technically involved and continue writing code.
  • Experience leading teams responsible for production-critical systems.
  • A track record of making systems more reliable, observable, and easier to operate.
  • Strong judgment when balancing feature delivery, user impact, technical debt, and platform investment.
  • Comfort turning ambiguity into momentum across multiple teams or technical domains.
  • A track record of pushing beyond off-the-shelf AI coding workflows by designing, testing, and rolling out new agentic tools, processes, and development practices that materially improve how teams build software.
  • Experience with systems where latency, uptime, consistency, or real-time behaviour materially affect the user experience.
  • Experience hiring and developing strong engineers, including people with specialised technical expertise.
  • Strong communication skills with engineers, product partners, peer leaders, users, and executives.
  • Enthusiasm for building both great technology and a great team around it.

We do not expect one person to have encountered every platform or technical challenge this team will face. We do expect you to enjoy learning quickly, asking good questions, and helping talented people solve hard problems together.

Nice to have

  • Experience building desktop applications, particularly with Electron.
  • Experience with real-time media, audio and video pipelines, WebRTC, or similar systems.
  • Experience supporting software across operating systems, devices, and third-party platform integrations.
  • Experience leading teams through rapid growth or significant platform change.

Why this role is special

Recording is where the physical world meets the software. Microphones, operating systems, meeting providers, network conditions, permissions, audio pipelines, and user behaviour all collide in ways that are difficult to reproduce and even harder to make invisible. Solving these problems well requires creativity, persistence, excellent engineering, and a team that genuinely enjoys working together.

Fellow records more meetings every week than ever before, and there is still a lot left to build. You will have the chance to shape a foundational product area, grow the team around it, and see the impact of your work every single day.

How we work

Fellow is a remote-first company with core collaboration hours from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Eastern Time.

This role is open to candidates located in Canada. Optional office space is available in Ottawa, Montreal, and Toronto.

We move quickly, share work early, and help one another get unstuck. We like ambitious goals, practical solutions, and people who bring energy to solving problems.

We believe speed and operational excellence reinforce each other. Strong systems and thoughtful engineering give teams the confidence to move quickly and try bold things.

We also believe work should be fun. The work matters, but we do our best work when the team is curious, collaborative, and genuinely excited to build together.

About Fellow
