You might see a few cities listed, but no need to be in any of them! We’re fully remote and hire across Canada and the U.S.

About the role:

ZayZoon is looking for a hands-on Engineering (Development) Manager experienced with Ruby on Rails to solve tough problems, build meaningful products, and help a talented team do the best work of their careers. You’ll partner closely with leaders across product, operations, and go-to-market teams to translate business needs into technical solutions and roadmaps, while leading your pod’s agile processes, mentoring developers, and staying close to the code. If you care about clean code, continuous improvement, and building products that genuinely improve people’s financial lives, we’d love to meet you.

Your impact:

  • Lead a pod of developers aligned to a specific persona (e.g., employee, employer) or growth segment (e.g., ACV, LTV)

  • Conduct bi-weekly 1:1s, review weekly updates, resolve team issues (escalating when needed), and manage time-off planning to maintain team coverage

  • Run all agile ceremonies (stand-up, planning, retro, backlog refinement) and drive strong team collaboration

  • Partner with the PM and cross-functional stakeholders to translate product needs into scalable, secure technical solutions

  • Architect new features with other leads, mentor developers, and advocate for addressing technical debt with clear, data-backed rationale

  • Coordinate QA, ensure high-quality delivery, and establish meaningful, data-driven KPIs (via Metabase) to track impact against company priorities

You bring:

  • 4+ years building and shipping production applications with Ruby on Rails

  • Approximately 1 year of people management experience as a Team Lead or Manager, including leading regular 1:1s, mentoring engineers, and supporting their growth and performance

  • Proven experience leading developers in a scrum/agile environment

  • Strong communicator who bridges business and technical teams and navigates conflict with clarity and empathy

  • Deep grounding in fundamentals: SOLID principles, domain-driven design, performant code/queries, and robust unit + integration testing

  • Ability to move fast when experimenting and build clean, scalable solutions when MVP becomes core

  • Full-stack ownership mindset from backend to frontend, testing, demos, and delivery

  • Comfortable with modern dev tooling (Git, GitHub, Jira, your editor of choice) plus the ability to search for good gifs when merging pull requests

Research shows that while men apply to jobs when they meet an average of 60% of listed criteria, women and other marginalized folks tend to only apply when they check every box. Think you have what it takes, but not sure you check every box? Apply to the role anyways. We’d love to talk and determine together whether you could be a great fit!

Why you’ll love working at ZayZoon:
  • Permanently Remote: Work from a desk, a coffee shop, or in the great outdoors - our jobs are fully remote, forever

  • Flexible Time Off: Whether it's a longer vacation to explore new horizons, a series of short breaks for regular rejuvenation, or stepping away for a new level of mastery in a skillset – our “You-do-You” time off program caters to the diverse and evolving lifestyles of our team with a maximum of 6 weeks vacation

  • Instant Benefits: All full-time employees get access to medical, vision, and dental benefits from their very first day including increased mental health coverage and a wellness stipend

  • Plus: Inclusive parental leave top-up, earned wage access, real time market data for salaries, a supportive culture for lifelong learners and more

A quick note on compensation:
We care a lot about employee experience and pay is a big part of that. We’re currently on a journey toward internal pay transparency, with that work wrapping up by the end of Q1. We’re focused on doing this thoughtfully, starting with the people who make ZayZoon what it is. Being more transparent with folks outside the company than with our own team wouldn’t feel right so we’re intentionally completing this important internal work first. In the meantime, we’re always happy to share more about our compensation philosophy and what you can expect as part of our hiring process!

What you can expect from us:

Every application will be reviewed by our team - we're committed to giving each application the attention it deserves because we know how important this step is for you. We want to make sure you're always in the loop and will respond to every application.

So go ahead and hit that apply button with confidence, knowing that we’re here for you every step of the way! We can't wait to hear from you.
