Job Summary:

The Head of Engineering is a senior leadership role responsible for overseeing and managing the software engineering team, driving technical and product strategy, fostering innovation, and ensuring the successful execution of engineering work. The Head of Engineering will work closely with Valor’s CEO/CIO and the senior leadership team to define product strategy and roadmap and will be responsible for the day-to-day management of the team, overseeing projects and engineering work, and the alignment of engineering resources with Firm goals. This role requires extensive experience in software engineering leadership, strategic planning, and team management.


Responsibilities

General job duties include, but are not limited to:

  • People Management
    • Lead, mentor, and inspire a diverse team of software engineers, ensuring alignment with strategic goals and objectives
    • Foster a culture of innovation, encouraging your team and other teams to explore new technologies and methodologies
    • Manage resource allocation, budgeting, and personnel development to maximize team effectiveness
  • Product & Technology
    • Drive the architectural vision and technical roadmap for Valor’s software products, collaborating with senior leadership, product champions, and other stakeholders
    • Oversee the planning and execution of software engineering projects and products, ensuring timely delivery while maintaining high standards of quality
  • Development Process
    • Establish and promote software engineering best practices, including code quality, testing, documentation, and deployment processes, as well as a scalable, reliable, and secure infrastructure
    • Drive strategic planning and execution, always striving for timely and zero-defect results

Qualifications

  • Proven track record of building software as an individual contributor, and managing software projects and teams in a fast-paced environment
  • Ability to translate high-level product strategies and guidance provided by the senior leadership team into technical requirements for the engineering team
  • Ability to assist in system design and the generation of key technical requirements while encouraging solutions that respect existing infrastructure
  • Ability to perform as an individual contributor, when needed
  • Exceptional problem-solving skills and the ability to make data-driven decisions
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to communicate complex technical concepts to non-technical stakeholders
  • Willingness to be resourceful, flexible, and adaptable; no task is too big or too small

Education and Experience

  • S. and/or M.S. with consistent outstanding academic record; advanced degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Mathematics, or related field preferred
  • 15+ years of experience in software engineering, with at least five years in a leadership role
  • Deep expertise in system architecture, software design patterns, CI/CD, and project management
  • Deep understanding of DevOps and cybersecurity principles and best practices in software development
