The Health & Safety Coordinator is responsible for all aspects of the facility's health and safety management systems, to ensure company health and safety compliance in all levels of governmental legislation. The coordinator is a member of the Joint Health, Safety, Ergonomics and Environmental Committees and works closely with the health and wellness to reintegrate injured personnel to the workplace.
REQUIRED SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE:
1. Successful completion of post-secondary education in the field of Occupational Health, Safety and Environmental Management, Ergonomics or Human Resources Management with equivalent work-related experience and training.
2. Minimum three (3) years work-related experience in a manufacturing environment, preferably automotive.
3. CRSP designation or equivalent a definite asset.
4. Maintain updates in specified field technology and legislative changes.
5. Knowledge and experience in applying ESA, Human Rights, OHSA and applicable regulations as well as WSIB policies and procedures.
6. Able to work in a strictly confidential and professional manner.
7. Must be able to meet tight deadlines and cope with stressful situations positively and proactively.
8. Proficient in Microsoft Office programs, Windows and Web-based applications, portals and various software programs as required.
GENERAL DUTIES:
1. Management Co-Chair of JHSEEC; makes recommendations as required. Ensures the committee is functioning optimally, develops monthly presentations and agendas. Ensures the JHSEEC has goals and is working to meet those goals on a consistent basis and that the JHSEEC member has received the necessary training to ensure they are competent to perform inspections/investigations/equipment pre-starts, etc.
2. Manages and administers professional health and safety services, respecting confidences and advises honestly.
3. Reviews departmental/business unit investigations of accidents/incidents/spills, etc. and follows up to ensure investigations are conducted thoroughly, the reports are detailed, and all leads are followed for an inclusive investigation. All documents are prepared and submitted to file to ensure support for legal compliance. Additional recommendations are provided to leaders if applicable and an action plan with targeted completion dates. Co-operates in the preparation of material/evidence for use in hearings and insurance investigations.
4. Help ensure compliance to environmental legal requirements and liaison with government agencies and corporate personnel as required in the interest of the company's environmental affairs.ie, NPRI, Waste audits, Certificates of Approval
5. Claims management of WSIB claims including submissions, correspondence, and liaison with the Worker's Safety and Insurance Board. Coordinate the return-to-work program for employees by working in cooperation with the employee, department supervisor, the employee's medical practitioners and WSIB. Follow up with employees upon their return-to-work by visiting them on the shop floor and monitoring their progress to ensure a successful return-to-work. Manages WSIB legislative compliance and acts as a liaison with government agencies and corporate in the interest of the company's health and safety affairs.
6. Collaborate with various departments or other resources to implement effective corrective actions to eliminate H&S hazards. Train internal and external groups on Presstran Industries environmental standards.
7. Develops and implements, maintains, and coordinates the health and safety management system for the anticipation, recognition, evaluation, and control of hazards.
8. Analyse/updates related statistics/KPI's and makes recommendations as required. Analyse accident statistics/type/frequency/severity and makes recommendations as required. Reports on aspects of the health and safety management system to the Human Resources Leader and the management team (e.g., corrective actions, continuous improvement programs).
9. Leads in the MOL visits, workplace inspections and investigations. Ensures and maintains accurate records to provide documentation and accountability in support of findings and conclusions. Has built a relationship with external government representatives and Magna/Cosma representatives responsible for Presstran.
10. Prepares for internal and external audits related to H&S & Environmental (Identifies aspects, impacts, etc.). Including Management Review of the H&S & Environmental Management Program.
RESPONSIBILITY AND WORKING CONDITIONS:
The Health and Safety Coordinator works under the general direction of the Human Resources Department Leader and Health, Safety and Environmental Supervisor performing a variety of health and safety tasks. The work requires independent judgement and knowledge with understanding of department/plant functions. The Health and Safety Coordinator must possess good communication skills, both verbal and written to exchange and/or collect information from a variety of contacts (internal and external). The Coordinator is responsible for confidentiality of personnel information. The Coordinator works in an office environment and spends variable periods of time throughout the plant area where there is exposure to workplace elements such as temperatures and noise.
