About the Role:

We are seeking a Product Counsel to join the growing Product Legal team to meet the expanding needs of our company and our customers.  In this role, you will be advising and partnering with our business teams to develop, enhance and scale Gusto’s growing suite of AI powered products and services. This is an opportunity to make a real impact on the lives of small business owners and to play a pivotal role in Gusto’s generative AI business strategy.  If you thrive in fast paced environments, and excel at finding creative solutions, dreaming big, and executing on complex cross functional projects this role is perfect for you!

About the Team:

Gusto’s Legal & Compliance team partners with product and engineering teams to enable innovation, facilitate responsible company growth, accelerate the Gusto roadmap, and provide compliant products to our customers, through solution-focused counsel on legal and business risks. We are passionate about using groundbreaking technology and excellent service to elevate the experience of small business owners and their employees. Each team member is a true owner and makes a tremendous impact every day.

Here’s what you’ll do day-to-day:

  • Counsel the product, engineering, and design teams on a range of issues including data privacy, AI use, and consumer protections.
  • Research and advise on complex regulatory frameworks to design or enhance innovative and regulated AI-powered products and services that support the HR and compliance needs of small businesses.
  • Contribute to our product suite from brainstorm and ideation through launch.
  • Contribute to key initiatives helping to mature our Legal & Compliance team’s functions.

Here’s what we're looking for:

  • JD degree and a member of a State bar/active license to practice law.
  • 7+ years of combined legal experience, with experience working in an in-house legal department at a technology company.  Experience must include data privacy, AI product counseling, and/or AI governance.
  • Experience providing pragmatic legal guidance related to tech products.

Here’s what we’d love to see you bring to the table:

  • A collaborative approach and demonstrated ability to work well independently under pressure, while contributing to cross-functional teams.
  • Enthusiasm for how technology can streamline and improve HR processes and painpoints.
  • Experience with consumer protection, HIPAA, employment, consumer finance/fintech, and/or start-up law.
  • Demonstrated ability to build consensus and build strong relationships.
  • An eagerness to dive in, build, and drive projects independently.
  • Experience creatively solving problems, taking into account legal risk and business needs.
  • A team player mindset (no job is too big or too small).
  • Attention to detail and the ability to follow through in a fast-paced environment.
