At Journal Technologies, we believe our technology can be a force for good in the world ensuring the proper and efficient functioning of some of the most foundational aspects of society - the courts and justice system.

We create and implement enterprise software that supports the administration of justice, currently in the United States, Canada, and Australia. While our eSeries product suite enables governments and their employees to deliver continued foundational court processes, our R&D focuses on leveraging emerging possibilities with technology to improve access and efficiency.

Headquartered in Los Angeles, Journal Technologies is a long-time, wholly-owned subsidiary of Daily Journal Corporation (NASDAQ: DJCO). We also have a major office in Logan, Utah, a team in Melbourne, Australia, an office in Victoria, Canada and a growing number of remote staff across North America.

Under our next generation of leadership, we're implementing a new vision for the company that prioritizes building an extraordinary workplace with empowered people at the heart of our business. Great people want to collaborate with great people, and we are actively looking for smart, motivated people who care deeply about the work they do.

Intermediate Product Designer

We are looking for an Intermediate Product Designer who is energized by solving real problems for real people—not just making things look good. This role sits at the intersection of user needs, product strategy, and technical constraints, and the work you do will directly impact how justice and public safety professionals navigate complex, high-stakes workflows every day.

You will report to the Product Design Lead and work closely with Product Managers and Product Owners across multiple initiatives spanning North America and Australia. In this role, you will own design execution across features and smaller initiatives, bringing thoughtful UX thinking to every stage of the product development process.

If you are the kind of designer who asks “why” before opening Figma, thrives within constraints, finds satisfaction in elegant solutions to genuinely hard problems, and is curious about what AI means for the future of this craft, this role is for you.

This is a remote position open to candidates across North America. We have offices in Los Angeles, California; Logan, Utah; and Victoria, British Columbia, and we prefer candidates located within a reasonable distance of one of these locations. However, if you are not near one of these offices but feel strongly that you are the right fit for this role, we still encourage you to apply.

Responsibilities:

  • Own the design execution for features or smaller initiatives within a product area.
  • Translate product requirements and user needs into thoughtful UX flows, wireframes, and UI designs.
  • Apply established design patterns, components, and accessibility standards consistently.
  • Plan and conduct usability testing with guidance and support.
  • Synthesize research findings into actionable design improvements.
  • Collaborate with Product Managers to clarify requirements and explore design options.
  • Work closely with Engineers to ensure designs are feasible and implemented as intended.
  • Iterate on designs based on user feedback, data, and stakeholder input.
  • Contribute to improving design quality, consistency, and usability across the product.
  • Continue building domain knowledge and understanding of users through hands-on work.

Requirements:

  • A portfolio demonstrating your design process and the thinking behind your work. Applications without a portfolio will not be reviewed.
  • A degree in design or a related field, or equivalent practical experience.
  • 3-5 years of product design experience in a professional product development environment.
  • A solid understanding of UX and UI principles, interaction design, and design best practices.
  • Proficiency in Figma for design and prototyping.
  • Experience working within or alongside product development teams.
  • Strong communication skills and the ability to articulate and defend design decisions to cross-functional stakeholders.
  • Comfort managing multiple design workstreams with guidance and staying organized across competing priorities.
  • A growing understanding of usability testing and research methods.
  • Experience contributing to or working within a design system.
  • Curiosity about AI-assisted design tools and a willingness to experiment with new workflows.
  • Experience working within Agile teams or formal training in Scrum or Agile methodologies is considered a strong asset.

Nice to Have

  • Familiarity with WCAG accessibility standards and experience designing solutions for compliance. These are meaningful skills on our team and an area of active growth.
  • Exposure to complex, regulated, or sensitive industries where design decisions carry real-world consequences.
  • Experience designing for enterprise or workflow-heavy applications.

The above statements describe the general nature and level of work being performed in this job function. They are not intended to be an exhaustive list of all duties; additional responsibilities may be assigned.

At this time, we are only able to consider candidates who are Canadian or U.S. citizens or permanent residents due to employment authorization requirements. We are unable to provide visa sponsorship or work authorization support for this position.
