Intermediate Systems Engineer – LC4ISR- Intelligence, Surveillance, Target Acquisition, and Reconnaissance (ISTAR)

Position Summary

Thales Canada, Defence & Security is engaged in supporting the Canadian Army’s Land Command, Control, Communications & Computers (C4) Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance (LC4ISR) systems which enable critical decisions on a daily basis.  Together with industry partners, Thales is building on the existing networks and applications to enhance digitized operations, support communications between joint and allied forces, and monitor and defend against the threats and evolving capabilities of potential adversaries.

Thales Canada is looking for people interested in directly contributing to the evolution of advanced digitized operations for the Canadian Army into the future, both in Canada and on overseas deployments.  The LC4ISR work is broadly divided into four areas, and this opportunity is with the Intelligence, Surveillance, Target Acquisition, and Reconnaissance (ISTAR) group at our Ottawa office.

We are searching for a Systems Engineer for a current vacancy on our team in Ottawa, Ontario Canada. This role is to lead and manage a team using agile methodologies. The system engineer will also be responsible to lead- test automation development for the STANAG 4586 (Standard Interfaces of UAV Control System (UCS) for NATO UAV Interoperability

Regulatory Compliance Requirement

This position requires direct or indirect access to hardware, software or technical information controlled under the Canadian Export Control List and/or the US the Export Administration Regulations (EAR). All applicants must be eligible or able to obtain authorization for such access.

Key Areas of Responsibility

A systems engineer should be comfortable in multidisciplinary and collaborative environments, performing duties such as:

  • Tailor the system engineering process, practices and tools;
  • Estimate and appropriately decompose work in an agile lifecycle process;
  • Provide timely and accurate status updates;
  • Develop the preliminary and detailed designs for system and subsystem elements;
  • Review and validate internal and subcontractor designs, plans, and schedules;
  • Identify, characterize, and describe issues in the system or its design through problem reports and document and design reviews;
  • Author technical documentation to capture the system and subsystem designs including the architecture, interfaces, and installation elements;
  • Collaborate with stakeholders to ensure the designs are consistent with needs, desires, and concerns of the end-users;
  • Support the development of verification and validation artifacts including plans and procedures;
  • Collaborate with other functions during the implementation and integration of the system and subsystem designs;
  • Resolution of technical issues arising during the implementation, integration and testing of the system and subsystem elements;
  • Support the installation and/or integration testing of the systems remotely or on customer site; and/or
  • Technical subcontract management including management of work scope and compliance of the (subcontractor) supplied solution;
  • The specific duties associated with the project role could include:
    • Lead a team using a Scaled Agile Framework (SAFe)
    • Estimate and decompose system and subsystem work into manageable tasks
    • STANAG 4586 ED4 Test Automation:
      • Lead test automation development for the STANAG 4586 ED4  (Standard Interfaces of UAV Control System (UCS) for NATO UAV Interoperability). This includes creating the high level automation plan, selecting and reviewing the standard and implementation guide, and selecting the test development priority.
      • Maintain the test environment infrastructure in the virtualize environment and in a physical lab space. Improve the environment and work with the lab dedicated IT teams as required.
      • Create and maintain a roadmap for internal software tool development so that the test automation development can keep accelerating.
      • Lead Test Automation Review meetings, review test plans and test suites.
      • Review and approve merge requests for new test automation development and new internal tool development.
  • STANAG 4586 ED5 Consumer Prototype:
    • Learn and keep up to date with the latest development with the STANAG 4586 ED5.
    • Support as required the UI Design and Testing of the ED5 Consumer Prototype.
    • Maintain the backlog to further develop the consumer prototype.

Minimum Requirements

  • Minimum of 5 years of professional experience in the design and integration of complex systems in commercial and/or military domains.
  • Ability to obtain clearances as specified under the Regulatory Compliance section, below.
  • University or college degree in engineering or a related discipline.

Preferred Qualifications

In addition to the minimum professional experience specified above, experience in any of the following areas would be considered an asset:

  • Experience using IBM’s Engineering Lifecycle Management (EWM) tool,
  • VMware Virtual Environments
  • GitLab,
  • .net,
  • C#,
  • Java

Physical Demands

  • Minimal lifting of test and electronic equipment, connecting equipment in a lab environment or job site (including onboard vehicle or vessel).

Special Position Requirements

  • 40 hours per week
  • Hybrid position – a mix of working from home and onsite (Some on-site work required in the lab).
  • Possibility of occasional travel to customer site for technical support / integration activities.  Possibility of occasional travel within Canada for planning events.

The reference Total Target Compensation (TTC) market range for this position, inclusive of annual base salary and the variable compensation target, is between Total Target Cash (TTC) 71,000 –95,000 -119,000 CAD Annual.

This reflects how companies in a similar industry and geographic region generally pay for similar jobs. This range helps the Company make pay decisions as one data point among many. Where a position falls within this range is also dependent on other factors including – but not limited to – the employee’s career path history, competencies, skills and performance, as well as the company’s annual salary budget, the customer’s program requirements, and the company’s internal equity.
