Lead Designer, Marketing Department

The Manhattan Institute for Policy Research (MI) is a community of scholars, journalists, activists, and civic leaders united by a shared commitment to advance economic opportunity, individual liberty, and the rule of law in America and its great cities.

About the Role

MI is seeking an experienced, like-minded designer to lead design efforts across the organization—Marketing, Research, Development, and Events, as well as City Journal.

The person in this role will oversee the creation of a diverse set of assets for two highly regarded brands—Manhattan Institute and City Journal—across research publications, social media, multi-channel campaigns (on and offline), event collateral, and fundraising efforts. The successful candidate is tech savvy, experienced with UX/UI and visual design, familiar with the latest, widely adopted tools, and skilled at conceptualizing new ideas and executing them with rigor. In addition, MI seeks a candidate who possesses heightened aesthetic sensibility, attention to detail, and enthusiasm about MI’s mission and work. The person selected for this role should be comfortable working in teams, collaborating with others, and receiving feedback.

This role will report to the Vice President of Marketing, work closely with Content Strategy and Technology, and interface with all departments with a service mindset.

Responsibilities

Key responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Design new website pages and microsites, integrating them with the brand portfolio
  • Create graphics and layout structures for research publications
  • Create graphics and animations for video assets
  • Design event collateral in digital and print forms such as invitations, programs and menus
  • Generate brand campaign ideas and assets to reach and engage new audiences
  • Evolve the brand as needed without diluting equity and credibility
  • Articulate and execute a visual vocabulary for the brands expressions on social media
  • Manage a design resource, ensure that departmental deadlines are met, and deliverables adhere to the highest standards

Qualifications

The ideal candidate will have:

  • 10 to 15 years of relevant experience
  • Vast digital experience in UX and visual design
  • Fluency in widely adopted design platforms and adjacent tools, including AI for design
  • Superb collaboration skills
  • Experience collaborating with tech teams
  • Experience with premium/high-end/content-heavy brands
  • Agency and multi-channel campaign experience a plus

Compensation and Benefits

Salary range: $140,000 - $170,000/year, based on experience and skills.

MI offers generous benefits, including four weeks paid vacation, a Summer Fridays program, paid paternity/maternity leave, medical and dental coverage with HSA options, medical and dependent-care FSA, mental health benefits, remote medicine, paid company cell phone, life insurance, and a 401(k) with a company-funded match. MI staff also benefit from the opportunity to collaborate and socialize with prominent scholars in our policy space.

To apply, please fill out the form below. Be sure to include a resume and cover letter explaining both your interest in MI and your qualifications for the role, as well as a link to your portfolio.
