Job Summary:
We are seeking an experienced and highly motivated Legal Counsel to provide legal support during a maternity leave cover for a fast-paced global technology company. As Legal Counsel you will manage D2L’s employment-related legal matters across various jurisdictions, offering guidance to the business on a wide range of topics, including hiring, terminations, employee relations, disputes, workplace training, global mobility, company policies, as well as managing external legal counsel relationships.
You will also assist in litigation matters, provide support in the review of procurement contracts, and manage various organizational compliance programs. You will act as a facilitator and trusted advisor to the business by providing practical legal advice across internal stakeholder groups.
Contract Type: This is a temporary position covering a 12-month maternity leave, with the potential for a permanent position depending on business needs and performance.
How You Will Make an Impact:
- Provide timely, clear, and practical legal advice to senior management and the People and Culture team on global employment law and immigration matters across multiple jurisdictions.
- Developing, revising, reviewing, implementing and interpreting the Company’s compliance policies, procedures and programs.
- Managing litigation and relationships with external counsel, including the selection and coordination of legal services and oversight of legal fees.
- Assisting with drafting and reviewing agreements, including various services, software license (inbound and outbound), non-disclosure and similar agreements.
- Providing support for a variety of business expansion and transaction opportunities, including incorporation and M&A, as needed.
- Cross-functional project management.
- Liaising with regulatory bodies and government authorities as required.
- Other duties as assigned.
What You'll Bring to the Role:
- Called to a bar in Canada or the United States.
- J.D. or LL.B degree.
- Minimum 3-5 years of relevant experience as a corporate or employment lawyer, either in-house or within a leading law firm.
- Strong knowledge of employment law across multiple jurisdictions, particularly in North America, Europe, and Asia.
- Experience drafting and reviewing contract terms and conditions, including liability, indemnity and IP considerations, government regulations and procurement practices.
- Transaction management experience an asset.
- International experience an asset.
- Exceptional written and oral communication and strong interpersonal skills.
- Ability to translate complex legal concepts into practical, business-friendly advice.
- Technologically-inclined, organized, detail-oriented and capable of working independently.
- Hard working, highly committed, reliable and flexible.
- Ability to multi-task effectively in fast-paced, multiple-project environment.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
- Project management skills and the ability to work cross-functionally.
The expected base salary range for a new hire in this role is listed below. The annualized base salary offered is determined by each candidate’s relevant knowledge, skills, education, training and experience. It is aligned to ensure both internal and external competitiveness using market data for the geographic location and industry. As part of the total compensation at D2L the role may be eligible for additional benefits including a Wellness Subsidy, Equity Grants, Variable Incentive, and more.
Base Salary Range
$118,000—$130,000 CAD
