The Agile Programmable Optical Transport R&D group is responsible for the development of world leading photonic hardware, photonic software and photonic system architecture. Within this group the Custom Link Engineering team is responsible for designing the most recent and next generation ciena equipment into customer networks to support the sales force.
In this role, you will gain a detailed understanding of a wide range of photonic transport networks including high density metro systems, transcontinental terrestrial systems, transoceanic subsea cables and state of the art ultra-high-speed transceivers. You will use proprietary models to simulate optical performance of modems and photonics in actual networks to obtain the most cost-effective solution for the customer’s application.
How you will contribute:
- Communicate with Sales Engineers and Account Primes to obtain all relevant details of customer network and application requirements
- Use proprietary models of Ciena equipment and fiber propagation to evaluate optical performance of current and next generation Ciena optical transport products in national and oceanic networks
- Use modeling results to produce link designs that meet customer requirements of high efficiency and lowest cost
- Provide detailed optical design information required to win the business or deploy a system
- Develop link engineering planning material for use by sales engineers
- Communicate regularly with the sales engineering force
- Work closely with other members of the Custom Link Engineering team to share best practices and promote team effectiveness
- Collaborate with other R&D teams who develop the proprietary models of ciena equipment and fiber propagation
- Your work will have a direct impact on the success of ciena winning business
The Must Haves:
- BSc or MSc degree in Engineering Physics, Physics, or Electrical Engineering, with a specific interest in optics, photonics & telecommunications.
- Understanding of the physical layer of optical networks

- Solid understanding and working knowledge of numerical methods
- Demonstrated proficiency with Python, MATLAB, JavaScript, HTML5, or REST interfaces

Pay ranges at Ciena are designed to accommodate variations in knowledge, skills, experience, market conditions, and locations, reflecting our diverse products, industries, and lines of business. Please note that the pay range information provided in this posting pertains specifically to the primary location, which is the top location listed in case multiple locations are available.
Non-Sales employees may be eligible for a discretionary incentive bonus, while Sales employees may be eligible for a sales commission.
