The Pluggable Modems Test Engineer is a key position reporting to the manager of Optical Plugs Test Engineering. As part of the NPI organization, the successful candidate will be responsible for developing and supporting test automation solutions targeted to Ciena’s family of coherent pluggable modems. The role involves collaboration with R&D, supply chain, as well as internal and partner manufacturing teams.

The ideal candidate will be:

  • A team player who works collaboratively with cross-functional teams to deliver efficient, maintainable, and expandable test solutions.
  • A highly technical, data-driven problem solver, with capability to debug both hardware and software-related issues.
  • Providing technical expertise and opinion on test hardware and software architecture.
  • Working with both internal and external partners to achieve key product performance criteria during the pluggable modem product lifecycle
  • Driving towards high yields, manufacturing efficiency and continuous improvement in collaboration with overseas manufacturing.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities of candidate will include:

  • Write tests and automation to bring-up new and support existing production lines
  • Participate in development, replication, transfer and support of test systems to overseas manufacturing partners for the purpose of calibrating and testing pluggable modems.
  • Provide technical insight to test instrument selection and station design
  • Support failure analysis, root cause identification and corrective action implementation of components, sub-systems and field failures
  • Support contract manufacturing partners for testing of prototype, pre-production and production runs.

  • Technical understanding of optical modem testing and manufacturing processes.

  • Strong commitment to customer satisfaction
  • Ability to travel 10% of time, primarily to Asia

Required Experience

  • Required: BS or MS degree in Electronics/Electrical Engineering, Engineering Physics, or Physics.
  • Desired: Optical test experience – components, discrete coherent transmitter, receiver, pluggable modules.
  • Basic electronics experience, RF knowledge desirable
  • Test automation software development; MATLAB experience, C# and/or python experience is an asset
  • Direct experience with various optical test instruments – OPM, OSA, VOA, Polarization Controller, etc. is an asset
  • Database, data analysis tool expertise

The annual pay range for this position is $77,500 - $164,500 CAD
Pay ranges at Ciena are designed to accommodate variations in knowledge, skills, experience, market conditions, and locations, reflecting our diverse products, industries, and lines of business. Please note that the pay range information provided in this posting pertains specifically to the primary location, which is the top location listed in case multiple locations are available.

Non-Sales employees may be eligible for a discretionary incentive bonus, while Sales employees may be eligible for a sales commission. In addition to competitive compensation, Ciena offers a comprehensive benefits package, including medical, dental, and vision plans, participation in 401(K) (USA) & DCPP (Canada) with company matching, Employee Stock Purchase Program (ESPP), Employee Assistance Program (EAP), company-paid holidays, paid sick leave, and vacation time.
