Job Description:

At Remitly, we believe everyone deserves the freedom to access, move, and manage their money wherever life takes them. Since 2011, we've tirelessly delivered on our promise to customers sending money globally, providing secure, simple, and reliable ways to manage their money, ensuring true peace of mind. Whether it's supporting loved ones back home, growing a business across continents, or pursuing new opportunities abroad, we're not just here to move money— we're here to move our global customers forward.
We're looking for builders, reimaginers, and global thinkers who want to work at the intersection of technology, trust, and transformation. If that's you and you're ready to do the most meaningful work of your career—we invite you to join over 2,800 passionate Remitlians worldwide who are united by our vision to transform lives with trusted financial services that transcend borders.

About the Role:

We are looking for a Principal Engineer to join our Verification organization who will lead the teams responsible for the full trust and safety stack that makes Remitly's mission possible. This includes identity verification, authentication and authorization, compliance controls, transaction monitoring, and the customer data platform that power it all.

Beyond owning these core systems, our organization is the internal platform that enables product teams across Remitly to build compliance controls into their new products at scale. As we expand into new markets and launch new financial services, the work of platformizing our verification and compliance capabilities involves evolving services originally built around our core remittance product into a truly scalable, reusable platform is the most consequential engineering challenge we face.

This is a senior individual contributor role operating across a medium-sized engineering organization of 20–50 engineers. You will be the technical anchor for the verification org through the setting architectural direction, shaping the APIs and platform services that product teams depend on, and ensuring we build for correctness, auditability, and scale in a heavily regulated environment.

You Will:

Technical Leadership

  • Define the architecture and long-term technical vision for Remitly's verification and compliance platform services, ensuring they can serve the needs of multiple products and markets.
  • Lead the platformization of existing verification services through the redesign of systems built around our remittance product into reusable, well-documented platform capabilities that product teams can confidently build on.
  • Raise the bar for the design of APIs and service contracts that internal engineering teams consume, with a strong focus on developer experience, reliability, and extensibility.
  • Establish and champion engineering standards for how compliance controls are designed, built, and integrated across Remitly's product surface.
  • Personally take on the hardest, highest-risk technical problems where correctness, consistency, and auditability are non-negotiable.

Organizational Impact

  • Partner closely with Product Management, compliance stakeholders, and legal to translate evolving regulatory requirements into sound, scalable technical solutions.
  • Drive alignment across engineering, product, and compliance teams on platform strategy, priorities, and technical direction.
  • Influence product teams to adopt platform services correctly through great design, clear documentation, and active technical partnership.
  • Mentor and actively develop senior engineers within the verification org, setting the bar for technical quality through design reviews, code reviews, and direct coaching.
  • Serve as a technical role model across the organization, elevating the overall caliber of engineering decision-making.

You Have:

  • 10+ years of software engineering experience, with a demonstrated track record of principal-level technical scope and organizational impact.
  • Deep expertise in designing and operating distributed systems at scale including strong command of reliability, availability, and performance trade-offs.
  • Proven experience building developer-facing APIs and internal platform services, with a genuine appreciation for developer experience and platform ergonomics.
  • Prior experience as part of an internal platform or infrastructure team — understands the unique dynamics of building for internal developer customers, including adoption, versioning, and migration.
  • Hands-on experience with identity, authentication and authorization systems – IAM, OAuth, KYC pipelines, or similar verification and access control domains.
  • Ability to lead through influence across multiple teams without direct authority, driving alignment on complex, cross-functional technical decisions.
