JOB DESCRIPTION

In our fully accredited testing laboratories, we simulate wind-driven rains, hurricane, and tornado winds, as well as hot and cold extreme temperatures to assess and verify building envelope products and systems before, during and after construction.

Building owners, regulatory authorities, architects, manufacturers, contractors, and consultants, rely on us to assess and validate the performance of buildings, products, systems, and structures to meet regulatory demands and protect brand value.
Our Ottawa, Montreal, and Toronto offices specialize in assessing the condition and performance of building envelope components, including new construction commissioning (BECx), performing building condition assessments (BCA's), reserve fund studies (RFS), building envelope investigations, field reviews and thermal analysis to provide design and repair solutions as well as project manage building envelope repair or replacement projects.
RESPONSIBILITIES
Senior Project Engineer will collaborate with the Engineering Leader and team by providing technical expertise in projects. Provides expert advice in all technical areas of the project in the appropriate discipline. Provide leadership, technical advice and counsel to other professionals. Exercise Project Handler Signature Authority as Project Handler of record responsible for opening, maintenance, completion, and closing of assigned new work and review Signature Authority as required as Reviewer of record responsible for initial review, status review, and final technical review of all new work engineering projects. Independently manages execution and timely completion of engineering projects in multiple product categories by analyzing project scope and determining project specifications, establishing test programs for complex product investigations, and preparing reports for clients.
Assist Engineering Leader in undertaking business development and promotional activities with new and existing clients in the pursuit of new projects including client outreach and preparing proposal and fee estimates. Determine project scope, develop a preliminary plan of investigation and project specifications with substantial latitude for action or decision, such as cost, time, and sample requirements by analyzing client input, available supplemental data, and construction detail. Recommends changes in procedures, or design where necessary. Projects may include frequent travel to conduct or witness tests at client sites.
- Initiate communication with clients to promote and explain the benefits of new and existing services. Communicate with clients to provide discuss technical issues explain UL procedures and requirements, convey project cost, and negotiate completion date and sample requirements. Follow up on contacts from clients to resolve technical issues and explains UL procedures and requirements. Act to address client concerns and to resolve complex client issues. Provide technical assistance to clients in reference to product inspection and follow-up services.
- Establish appropriate project program by reviewing files and project information with consideration to UL requirements. Plans, conducts and supervises projects. Determine areas in which the project is not in compliance with UL requirements or of any changes in project scope or specifications and notify the client.
- Coordinate complex project activities. Serve as project handler of record responsible for opening, maintenance, completion, and closing of assigned new work and sign as reviewer of record as assigned.
- Communicate project status and results to clients through frequent contact and by preparing reports.
- Resolve complex engineering issues associated with project by analyzing and reporting on the findings.
- Provide leadership and technical advice on special projects that involve complex, new or unusual issues.
- Provide direction as a Primary Designated Engineer or Designated Engineer for project.
- Establish appropriate project programs. Support and guide project handlers to ensure compliance with requirements, changes in project scope or specifications and customer notifications. You will handle projects and/or act as lead reviewer to support workflow and demand.
- Direct and review work of assigned staff. Train staff and entry level engineers. Provides technical assistance on projects to staff.
- Provide direct support to customers and team by providing technical guidance and engineering judgment to complete projects and address all issues arising needing resolution (i.e. customer complaints, unusual requests, technical advice). Ensure quality and adherence to policies and standard requirements.
- Increase customer loyalty, anticipate customer needs and provide proactive solutions. Gather, share and respond to customer feedback. Coach and mentor the team to do the same. Support sales by building relationships with customers, maintain a deep understanding of what is in pipeline, obtain feedback on how UL can do better, what is working well and identify actions and solutions.
- Integrates continuous improvement concepts and techniques into all aspects of the job.
- Participate in discussions to drive business initiatives through brainstorming discussions.
- Collaborate and build trust with customers to meet or exceed their expectations.
- Read and follow the Underwriters Laboratories Code of Conduct and follow all physical and digital security practices.

QUALIFICATIONS
- Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering, Building Science, Architectural Science, or Engineering Technology.
- P. Eng. designation is considered an asset.
- Must have a minimum of 8 years progressive experience with a proven track record of delivering complex Building Envelope projects.
- Knowledgeable of local market conditions, emerging trends and opportunities.
- Proven record of building relationships and developing networks.
- Extensive knowledge of construction industry appropriate discipline.
- Demonstrated ability to apply project-handling concepts in use in areas of expertise, including application to complex, new, or unusual projects.
- Excellent teamwork and communication skills.
- The willingness to be UL Solutions.
