About the Role:
As a Senior Software Engineering Manager on the Embedded Payroll team, you'll be a key technical leader responsible for influencing the team and broader organization as we build and scale our product. You'll do this through a combination of direct team leadership as well as influencing other teams across Gusto as we build momentum beyond our public platform.

Gusto Embedded Payroll is a platform that allows developers to embed payroll directly into their own software using our APIs. We've taken Gusto’s robust payroll infrastructure and made it available to third-party developers. Our vision is to enable anyone to build the best payroll product for their end customers - powering payroll for small and medium businesses across a variety of industries, from vertical SaaS to fintech and neobanks.

Here’s what you’ll do day-to-day:
- Engage directly with our developer-customers to deliver a remarkable payroll product.
- Level up the craft of software engineering across the organization by providing technical guidance and mentoring.
- Hire, lead and grow a team of diverse and talented engineers
- Build and foster an inclusive, collaborative and high performance culture
- Collaborate with our product management and design teams to define problem spaces and lead complex technical projects from initial planning, execution, to final delivery.
- Work closely with leadership and cross functional partner teams to help set priorities for both short term and long term roadmaps.
- Contribute to engineering-wide initiatives as a member of Gusto’s engineering management team.
Here’s what we're looking for:
- Experience: 10+ years of professional software development experience and 3+ years of management experience. You have been a technical owner for organization-wide engineering initiatives and have played a role in scaling engineering organizations.
- Technical Expertise: You have a frontend development background, and have written large applications in React as well as led teams that shipped React app.
- Platform Thinker: You've designed and built platforms and public-facing APIs, and have a strong understanding of how to build for reliability and performance at scale.
- Bar Raiser: You've spent time mentoring and raising the technical bar for the entire organization. Others look to you for guidance on how to tackle ambiguous problems and handle competing priorities.
- Effective Communicator: You think in terms of business priorities and know about how to orient your team around the right technical goals for the business as well as how to convey technical constraints and needs to business leaders.
Our cash compensation amount for this role is targeted at $189,000/yr to $225,000/yr in Denver, and $223,000/yr to $265,000/yr for San Francisco & New York. Stock equity is additional. Final offer amounts are determined by multiple factors including candidate experience and expertise and may vary from the amounts listed above.
Gusto has physical office spaces in Denver, San Francisco, and New York City. Employees who are based in those locations will be expected to work from the office on designated days approximately 2-3 days per week (or more depending on role). The same office expectations apply to all Symmetry roles, Gusto's subsidiary, whose physical office is in Scottsdale.
Note: The San Francisco office expectations encompass both the San Francisco and San Jose metro areas.
When approved to work from a location other than a Gusto office, a secure, reliable, and consistent internet connection is required. This includes non-office days for hybrid employees.
