Huawei Canada's Advanced Optical Technology Lab focuses on advanced R&D in high-performance optical communications and networking. Our expert team specializes in transmission algorithms, systems, physics, and optical network management. The lab engages in projects ranging from deep research to developing key product features, actively participating in standards organizations and collaborative research with partners. About the Job:

  • We are looking for candidates who can contribute to one or more of the following domains:

    - HCF Optimization & Engineering: Enhancing fiber design for low loss, wide bandwidth, and mechanical robustness suitable for industrial deployment.

    - Specialized Components: Developing HCF-compatible connectors, couplers, amplifiers, and interfacing technologies between HCF and standard single-mode fibers (SMF).

    - System Transmission & Optimization: Conducting high-capacity transmission experiments and optimizing modulation formats for the unique properties of HCF.

    - Performance Monitoring & Sensing: Developing real-time monitoring techniques and leveraging HCF for advanced sensing applications within a communication framework.

  • Independently propose and lead high-impact research projects.

  • Utilize existing tools or develop new tools to simulate fiber structures and system performance.

  • Design and build experimental testbeds to validate theories and prototype new devices.

  • Draft high-quality technical reports, grant proposals, and manuscripts for top-tier journals and conferences.

The total target annual compensation for this position ranges from $106,000 to $156,000 depending on education, experience, and demonstrated expertise.

About the ideal candidate:

  • Ph.D. in Optical Engineering, Physics, Electronic Engineering, or a closely related field.

  • Proven track record in optical fiber research. Direct experience with Hollow-Core Fibers or Photonic Crystal Fibers is an asset.

  • Proficiency in optical simulation software and hands-on experience with high-speed optical testing equipment (e.g., OSA, Oscilloscopes, AWGs).

  • Strong analytical thinking, excellent English technical writing skills, and a collaborative mindset.
