Owns significant parts of a regulated insurance platform end to end, from discovering ambiguous customer problems through architecture, implementation, production deployment, and adoption. Establishes technical direction, builds full-stack systems, integrates AI and agentic workflows responsibly, collaborates directly with clients and business users, shapes the product roadmap, and mentors engineers. The role requires strong product judgment, startup ownership, pragmatic architecture decisions, and 5+ years of production software experience.
About Luzern Risk
Luzern Risk is a technology-first captive insurance manager. We form and run captive insurance companies end to end: structuring, licensing, governance, accounting, claims, and regulatory compliance, delivered through an AI-native platform where software agents run the workflows and licensed experts direct, approve, and advise. The model is working: 15+ captives under management, more than $50M in premium, licenses in 11 U.S. domiciles plus the Cayman Islands, and zero client turnover.
The mandate for the Senior Software Engineer is to own significant parts of the platform that runs this business, set the bar for how we build, and stay close enough to customers to decide what is worth building in the first place. Engineering is small and deliberate, and at this stage a senior engineer is not one voice among many. You take ambiguous, high-stakes problems and drive them from discovery through production.
You will treat AI as core infrastructure, not a feature, and set the standard for using it responsibly in a regulated domain. The best product ideas here come from direct contact with the licensed experts and clients whose work our software supports, and you will bring that judgment into the room when we decide what comes next.
Core Responsibilities
- Own hard problems end to end: scope ambiguous, high-stakes work, design the system, build the difficult parts, and see it through to real adoption.
- Set the technical direction: build across the stack and establish the patterns and architecture others follow as we scale. Your decisions should hold up under growth.
- Work side by side with users: run working sessions with business users and clients, pull out the requirements they did not know how to articulate, and turn messy manual workflows into durable product.
- Make AI core infrastructure: design how modern AI models fit into the product and set the standard for doing it responsibly, with clear judgment about where a human must stay in the loop.
- Shape the roadmap: bring product judgment earned through direct customer contact, and help decide what we build next, not just how.
- Lift the team: review work, unblock people, mentor engineers, and model the ownership and quality we want everywhere.
Successful candidates will demonstrate
- 5+ years building and shipping production software.
- Deep full-stack ability. You can own a system end to end and make sound calls about architecture, data, and trade-offs.
- Pragmatism. You can build systems that scale but know when to choose simple solutions.
- A track record integrating LLMs and agentic workflows into production applications, with earned opinions about where they belong and where they do not.
- Excellent with non-engineers. You can lead a working session with a client's finance or operations lead, surface hidden requirements, and explain technical trade-offs in plain language.
- Strong product instincts. You can decide what is worth building, not just build what you are handed.
- A real pull toward startups and the ownership that comes with them. You make fast, sound decisions under pressure and thrive in ambiguity.
- Smart, low ego, direct, and relentless about getting to the bottom of hard problems.
Our Stack
We don’t expect you to have used every tool in this list on day one. A strong full-stack foundation and the ability to pick up new patterns quickly are what matter most.
- TypeScript across the product. Next.js front end, NestJS back end.
- Python for our analytics models.
- Event-sourced CQRS services, Kafka, PostgreSQL.
- Auth0 and SpiceDB for auth.
- GCP, GKE, GitHub.
Where This Goes
Captive management is the entry point, not the destination. The platform we are building for our own book is designed to become infrastructure for how companies finance risk. A senior engineer here helps set the technical foundation, and the standards, that the discipline gets built on. The scope of this seat grows with that arc.
The base pay range for this role is $175,000 – $300,000 per year.
