At the forefront of modernizing Block's identity infrastructure, we operate at the intersection of cutting-edge security practices and robust cloud infrastructure. Leading three specialized teams with around 20 talented engineers, you'll drive forward impactful initiatives that have company wide impact. This role offers the opportunity to lead high-visibility projects that redefine how we approach identity and access management at scale, delivering innovation that resonates across the entire organization and beyond.
We are seeking a Senior Security Engineering Manager to lead the Identity Infrastructure group. In this role, you will guide the strategic direction, technical roadmap, and execution of our identity, credential, and access management solutions. You will work closely with key stakeholders across security, platform engineering, and infrastructure teams to ensure that our services are not only secure but also scalable, reliable and efficient.
You Will
Leadership and Strategy:

  • Provide strategic leadership to three security engineering teams, focusing on designing, developing, and operating secure and scalable authentication and authorization services across Block's infrastructure.
  • Define and drive the vision for Identity Infrastructure, aligning with company-wide security and infrastructure goals.
  • Build and maintain strong cross-functional relationships with product, security, platform engineering, and other key teams to influence and drive security initiatives.

Technical Oversight and System Design:

  • Oversee the development of cutting edge robust identity, credential, and access management systems that meet the needs of both internal and external services in our data centers, GCP, and AWS environments.
  • Provide technical guidance to your teams, reviewing architecture and system design to ensure high performance, reliability, and security across the board.
  • Partner with security teams to ensure that all identity infrastructure meets the highest security standards and complies with industry regulations.

Team Development and Execution:

  • Manage, mentor, and grow a diverse team of engineers, fostering a culture of collaboration, technical excellence, and continuous improvement.
  • Cultivate an environment of psychological safety where team members feel comfortable sharing ideas, taking risks, and learning from mistakes.
  • Set goals, track progress, and ensure timely and high-quality delivery of projects by your teams.
  • Advocate for and implement best practices in secure software development and cloud infrastructure security.

Operational Excellence:

  • Ensure that our authentication and authorization services maintain a high level of availability, security, and scalability, while supporting Block's rapidly growing business.
  • Lead efforts to continuously improve security posture, monitoring, and incident response capabilities within the identity infrastructure.

You Have

  • Proven experience leading large engineering teams (20+ engineers) in a security or infrastructure-focused domain.
  • Deep technical knowledge of identity, credential, and access management (ICAM), as well as cloud infrastructure (GCP, AWS) and data center security.
  • Strong understanding of authentication protocols (OAuth, SAML, etc.) and cryptographic standards for securing S2S communications and identities.
  • Experience working cross-functionally with security, product, and platform engineering teams to design and implement secure solutions.
  • A track record of delivering large-scale infrastructure projects that improve security, scalability, and performance.
  • Excellent communication and leadership skills, with the ability to influence and align diverse teams around a common vision.
