About the team
Cloudflare is redefining the way network functions are deployed at scale. Magic WAN and Magic Transit put the connectivity, scale, and performance of Cloudflare's global network in front of customers' network infrastructure, providing a single pane of glass for deploying and managing network functions like Secure Web Gateway, Next Generation Firewall, IDS/IPS, WAN optimization, and more. Magic Platform team is responsible for a set of products, features, and technologies that comprise Magic Transit and Magic WAN, working alongside other engineering teams in this space to deliver a cohesive customer experience. We are a team of engineers and product managers who obsess over quickly building products that solve real customer problems using innovative technologies and techniques which leverage Cloudflare's unique architecture and global network footprint.
About the role
As a software engineer on the Magic Platform team, you will be designing and developing distributed edge services and monitoring. You will proactively monitor production services, respond to customer escalations and incidents.
We primarily use Go for our control plane services on our distributed edge network. Our dataplane is built with Linux netfilter, network namespaces, and nftables. We operate our systems with the help of tools like SaltStack, Prometheus, and Grafana.

Desirable skills, knowledge, and experience
- Expertise with Linux networking internals
- Understanding of L2, L3 networking and routing protocols
- Userspace networking
- Complex nft and iptables rules
- Writing code for massively parallelized distributed systems
- Experience with various load balancing strategies -- and the knowledge to know which is best for different circumstances
- Systems-level programming experience, especially in Go
- BPF
- Strong ability to debug issues in complex systems
- Own solutions end-to-end and driving the design, development, and deployment process
- Able to work across teams and level common, sustainable solutions
- Creative, empathetic, open-minded, collaborative problem solver
- Focus on clarity in written and verbal communication
Compensation
Compensation may be adjusted depending on work location. There are multiple levels open on the team, both mid & senior level.
Senior Level (4)
- For Bay Area-based hires: Estimated annual salary of $196,000 - $240,000
- For New York City, Washington, and California (excluding Bay Area) based hires: Estimated annual salary of $187,000 - $229,000.
- For Colorado-based hires: Estimated annual salary of $168,000 - $206,000.
Mid Level (3)
- For Bay Area-based hires: Estimated annual salary of $162,000 - $198,000
- For New York City, Washington, and California (excluding Bay Area) based hires: Estimated annual salary of $154,000 - $188,000
- For Colorado-based hires: Estimated annual salary of $137,000 - $167,000
