The Principal Engineer: silicon photonics – MEMS R&D is a key leader working with a team of development engineers responsible for the design of silicon photonics chips for cloud and network applications especially for the rapidly growing AI market.  You will work in a team environment to develop unique silicon photonics chips and components through conception, modeling, design, layout, and performance evaluation. These components enable differentiated Lumentum products that are produced in large volume for highly competitive markets.

Responsibilities:

  • Develop novel and unique SiPho-MEMs based optical designs while working within the larger photonic integrated circuit (PIC) development team. Coordinate the adaptation of existing photonic component designs to this new platform.
  • Work collaboratively with wafer fabrication partners and packaging teams to ensure that chip solutions meet all constraints for target applications considering fabrication process capability and required manufacturing tolerances.
  • Collaborate with test engineering team to develop dedicated test and verification hardware and software, define requirements, and analyze engineering verification measurements.
  • Evaluate performance for typical behavior and for yield margin in a cost-effective high-volume manufacturing environment.
  • Create a culture of continuous improvement to optimize performance and cost efficiency, to maintain Lumentum’s product competitiveness and to find novel solutions for next generation products
  • Encourage communication between SiPho-MEMS team and broader photonics component development team. Engage with others to both learn and teach.

Qualifications:

  • A PhD in Electrical Engineering or Physics or equivalent combination of education and work experience along with a solid background in optical physics and photonics
  • Experience in managing photonic component development in a fast-paced environment.
  • Strong background in photonic device modeling and analysis of test results
  • Experience with test methods used to characterize photonic chips
  • Expertise in software development to run experiments and/or to script simulations
  • Demonstrated drive and aptitude for research and development
  • Excellent oral and written English communication and presentation skills
  • Self-motivated, with strong analytical and problem-solving skills

Desired Qualities:

  • Proficiency with photonics simulation techniques such as FDTD, EME, etc. and software platforms that implement such techniques (e.g., Lumerical, Synopsys)
  • Proficiency with physical layout and verification software
  • Proficiency with statistical analysis software (SAS JMP)
  • Experience with fabrication of silicon photonics and MEMS chips

Pay Range: $150,000 - 165,000
