About the role
Enverus Intelligence publishes daily and periodic coverage of the energy industry for clients who make business decisions based on it. We're adding a writer to cover the Power & Utilities sector, working under the guidance of our Editorial Director as a subject matter expert in that space. You'll write for our publications from provided news prompts, from your own monitoring of industry news, and from company presentations, conference call transcripts, and similar sources. You'll also develop longer pieces on industry trends, using Enverus proprietary data where it applies.
Coverage areas
  • Wholesale electricity markets: energy and capacity market design, pricing, and results, including ISO/RTO operations across ERCOT, PJM, MISO, SPP, CAISO, and NYISO
  • Generation: natural gas, renewables, storage, nuclear, and plant retirements and additions
  • Load growth: data center demand, electrification, and industrial load, and how they affect forecasts and resource planning
  • Transmission and interconnection: transmission build-out, interconnection queues, and project timelines
  • Grid reliability and resource adequacy: reserve margins, reliability standards, and seasonal risk
  • Utility regulation: rate cases, integrated resource plans, and proceedings before FERC and state utility commissions
  • Utility corporate activity: capital plans, earnings, M&A, and strategic shifts disclosed in filings and calls

What you'll do
  • Cover Power & Utilities. Write timely, tight, and interesting content on power and utility news and company operations for our publications, across the coverage areas above.
  • Add value beyond the press release. Tie news to additional company context: investor presentations, conference calls, past disclosures, regulatory filings, and operational and financial data from Enverus proprietary tools and third-party sources.
  • Turn data into content. Create tables and graphics from proprietary and third-party data to support your writing, and develop data analysis around sector trends.
  • Build and maintain your sourcing. Keep a comprehensive collection of news sources for your beat, drawing on both Enverus tools and outside sources.
  • Develop thought leadership. Produce longer pieces that identify and explain trends in the sector, and bring your own story ideas to the Editorial Director.
  • Work across the team. Contribute to coverage, tables, infographics, and distribution emails that increase engagement, and work with others in the broader organization on publication goals.
  • Follow house standards. Apply the company's style conventions to all content.

Competitive Candidate Profile
  • 5 to 15 years of writing experience
  • A degree in journalism, communications, or English, or equivalent professional experience in writing and the energy industry
  • Operational knowledge of the energy industry
  • Ability to create and manipulate data in Excel
  • Strong knowledge of AP Style
  • Ability to write tight, succinct, interesting content on tight deadlines and to be a subject matter expert across multiple industry segments

Power & Utilities focus
  • Working knowledge of electricity and utility sector economics, including how wholesale power markets, capacity markets, and utility regulation work
  • Experience following regulatory proceedings and filings, such as those before FERC or state utility commissions
  • Demonstrated ability to explain load growth, resource adequacy, transmission, or grid reliability to a professional audience
  • Comfort reading and questioning company and utility disclosures, earnings materials, and conference calls

Preferred skills and competencies
  • Experience covering an ISO/RTO or utility sector beat for a publication, research group, or industry news organization
  • Experience building tables and charts from data in Excel or other analysis tools
  • Interest in AI-assisted research and drafting workflows. Our team uses AI tools such as Claude daily, and we're looking for writers who will use them to speed up research and production while owning the accuracy of every fact.
