Job Description:

Microchip is a global leader in innovative network synchronization solutions, powering the backbone of next-generation communications and infrastructure. Our Ottawa-based team is dedicated to advancing the state of the art in synchronization technology, and we are seeking a highly experienced Staff Embedded Software Engineer to join us. This is a unique opportunity for a technical leader who aspires to grow into a future management role within our network synchronization software team.

Requirements/Qualifications:

Key Responsibilities:

  • Technical Leadership: Lead the design, development, and testing of embedded software for network synchronization products, including hardware drivers, protocol stacks (e.g., IEEE-1588 PTP), and advanced timing algorithms.
  • Architecture & Strategy: Define software architecture and contribute to the technical roadmap for network synchronization solutions.
  • Cross-Functional Collaboration: Work closely with marketing, system, and application teams to define requirements and deliver integrated, high-performance synchronization solutions.
  • Problem Solving: Tackle complex technical challenges, perform root cause analysis, and drive resolution of critical issues.
  • Process Improvement: Champion best practices in network synchronization software development, code quality, tools, and process optimization.
  • Documentation: Ensure thorough documentation of designs, code, and development processes.
  • Agile Participation: Play an active role in the full Agile software development lifecycle, from requirements gathering through deployment and ongoing maintenance.
  • Leadership Development: Prepare for future management responsibilities by developing leadership skills and understanding team dynamics.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s or higher degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or a related field.
  • 12+ years of professional experience in embedded software development, preferably in networking or telecommunications.
  • Deep expertise in C/C++ and Python programming.
  • Strong knowledge of low-level embedded software, real-time operating systems, and HW/SW interactions.
  • Proven track record of technical leadership and mentoring within engineering teams.
  • Excellent analytical, problem-solving, and debugging skills; comfortable with lab equipment and troubleshooting hardware/software integration.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.

Nice to have:

  • Knowledge of network synchronization protocols (e.g., IEEE 1588 PTP), PLL design, and timing algorithms.
  • Familiarity with artificial intelligence and machine learning principles.
  • Experience with Agile software development practices, Linux, Atlassian tools, static/dynamic analysis and security scanning tools.
  • Cloud & Virtualization: AWS, Docker, Kubernetes.
  • Prior experience in a technical lead or team lead role.

We offer a total compensation package that ranks among the best in the industry. It consists of competitive base pay, restricted stock units, and quarterly bonus payments. Benefits of working at Microchip

The annual base salary range for this position is 107,000 - 226,000.*

*Range is dependent on numerous factors including job location, skills and experience.
