Who we areAbout Stripe

Stripe is a financial infrastructure platform for businesses. Millions of companies—from the world’s largest enterprises to the most ambitious startups—use Stripe to accept payments, grow their revenue, and accelerate new business opportunities. Our mission is to increase the GDP of the internet, and we have a staggering amount of work ahead. That means you have an unprecedented opportunity to put the global economy within everyone’s reach while doing the most important work of your career.

About the team

The Billing Experience team builds user-facing products that help people quickly start, efficiently operate, and easily scale any business model without code or complex integrations. Our users depend on our products to make it easy for themselves and their customers to manage subscriptions, invoices, and payments. We deliver these capabilities at scale to manage millions of payments a day, for businesses ranging from exciting, fast moving startups to large, world-spanning companies. We aim to make it possible for a merchant to launch their business on Stripe Billing in a single afternoon by providing clear, intuitive, and cohesive no-code experiences to both merchants and their end customers.

What you’ll do

We’re looking for an experienced Staff Frontend Engineer to join our team and lead initiatives focused on building a durable UI platform for Stripe Billing. In this role, you will be responsible for defining strong front-end architecture patterns, leading development of well abstracted reusable components, and collaborating across teams to increase developer velocity. As a staff engineer on Billing, you will work with fellow engineers, engineering managers and cross-functional partners to design and support the creation of end-to-end product experiences. You will help foster a culture of strong technical decision making, and define best practices that enable the team to iterate and learn in increasingly tight feedback loops. You will excel in this role if you’re an experienced engineer with deep front-end expertise who can collaborate effectively across multiple teams and functions to deliver results.

Responsibilities

  • Lead by example in designing, developing and delivering a performant, well abstracted frontend platform.
  • Drive frontend architecture discussions and technical breakdowns.
  • Partner closely with engineering, product, and design leadership to define our technical strategy.
  • Establish best practices, frameworks, and repeatable processes for other engineering teams to leverage when building product experiences.
  • Make effective tradeoffs that consider business priorities, user experience, and a sustainable technical foundation.
  • Develop and lead execution against both short-term and long-term roadmaps.
  • Work closely with platform teams across Stripe to agree on best practices and express the needs of the Billing organization.
  • Work in a variety of languages and technologies, including Typescript, React, GraphQL. Are comfortable investigating issues in Ruby and Java.
  • Mentor and coach individual contributors to become the next generation of leaders at Stripe.

Who you are

We’re looking for someone who meets the minimum requirements to be considered for the role. If you meet these requirements, you are encouraged to apply. The preferred qualifications are a bonus, not a requirement.

Minimum requirements

  • 10+ years of experience as in full time software development roles.
  • You have a strong technical background, including 8+ years of experience designing and engineering products and user surfaces for high-impact products.
  • You have a deep technical understanding of frontend technologies, patterns, and best practices. You have a firm understanding of backend systems which enable you to collaborate on problems that span the entire stack.
  • You’re self-directed and can operate autonomously across multiple teams to deliver scaled impact.
  • You have experience as a technical lead, including defining the roadmap for complex projects spanning multiple teams and functions.
  • You have experience mentoring and growing senior engineers.
  • You have experience working with modern web frameworks and languages, such as React, TypeScript, and GraphQL.

Preferred qualifications

  • You have a strong product and design sense, and enjoy collaborating closely with cross-functional partners to help shape high quality end-to-end experiences.
