Since we opened our doors in 2009, the world of commerce has evolved immensely, and so has Square. After enabling anyone to take payments and never miss a sale, we saw sellers stymied by disparate, outmoded products and tools that wouldn't work together.
So we expanded into software and started building integrated, omnichannel solutions - to help sellers sell online, manage inventory, offer buy now, pay later functionality, book appointments, engage loyal buyers, and hire and pay staff. Across it all, we've embedded financial services tools at the point of sale, so merchants can access a business loan and manage their cash flow in one place. Afterpay furthers our goal to provide omnichannel tools that unlock meaningful value and growth, enabling sellers to capture the next generation shopper, increase order sizes, and compete at a larger scale.
Today, we are a partner to sellers of all sizes - large, enterprise-scale businesses with complex operations, sellers just starting, as well as merchants who began selling with Square and have grown larger over time. The Role
The Multimodal AI team utilizes expertise in computer vision and natural language processing to make Square's products better for sellers. Our work helps sellers get online more easily, understand their business data better, and create more personalized experiences for their customers. We're looking for an ML Engineer with Staff-level experience building and improving ML and AI models.
You Will
- Lead modeling efforts on projects that improve core Square products
- Work with stakeholders to discover ML opportunities and develop project plans
- Keep up with new AI developments and bring useful technologies into our work
- Mentor junior engineers in solving ML and AI problems
- Make strategic decisions about how we deploy and maintain our models
- Have an impact on the future of AI at Square!
You Have
- 8+ years of experience as an ML Engineer or similar
- A track record of building effective ML/AI solutions with impact
- Demonstrated knowledge in Computer Vision or NLP
- Experience improving models through testing and refinement
- Experience building scalable ML systems
- Effective coding skills
- Strong written and verbal communication skills
- Eagerness to collaborate on difficult problems

The successful candidate's starting pay will be determined based on job-related skills, experience, qualifications, work location, and market conditions. These ranges may be modified in the future.
