Telesat’s System Modeling team architects, develops, and maintains the Lightspeed System Model—an advanced engineering software platform running on high-performance computing (HPC) infrastructure. This tool enables resource allocation modeling for Lightspeed operations and end-to-end performance evaluation of the Telesat Lightspeed satellite constellation.
As a System Engineering Specialist, you will help lead the technical direction of the Lightspeed System Model. You will contribute to the development and integration of sophisticated algorithms, guide performance assessments, and influence architectural decisions that drive the success of the constellation. You will also mentor engineering teams and collaborate across departments to ensure technical alignment with system requirements and seamless integration into the overall Lightspeed system.
Main Responsibilities
- Take ownership of the design, development, and validation of advanced algorithms in MATLAB to optimize system performance and reliability while meeting system requirements.
- Oversee performance analysis of the Lightspeed constellation, including throughput, latency, satellite handover, availability, capacity, and regulatory compliance metrics.
- Drive cross-functional collaboration with System Modeling, Software Development, Quality Assurance, and System Engineering teams to ensure seamless integration and testing.
- Provide technical leadership and mentorship to junior engineers, fostering innovation and continuous improvement.
- Interface with other Telesat teams regarding topics such as satellite payload and ground segment characteristics, definitions of performance metrics, performance evaluations, and regulatory compliance.
- Lead trade-off studies and system architecture evaluations, contributing to long-term planning and system evolution.
- Author and review high-quality technical documentation.
- Follow Agile software development methodologies.
- Ensure code quality through unit testing, refactoring, and adherence to coding standards.
Education and Experience Required
- Bachelor's or Master's degree in Electrical Engineering, System Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, or a related field.
- Experience in related system design and modeling roles, with a minimum of 10 years in similar roles.
- Strong understanding of software development lifecycle, Agile methodologies, and CI/CD tools.
- Proven expertise in MATLAB and algorithm development.
- Experience with Java is an asset.
- Experience with HPC environments and cluster job managers is an asset.
- Knowledge of radio communication systems and/or satellite communication is desirable.
- Experience in mathematical optimization including linear programming is desirable.
