Systems Design Engineer
Portugal or Ottawa, Hybrid Office & Remote
Infinera has a Network Planning position open within the Network Solutions Group (NSG). This person will play a key role in analyzing different carrier networking environments and in the development of optimized solutions, working closely with Marketing, Sales, Optical and Software Engineering departments.
Job Description
Key Responsibilities:
• Support for RFP/RFQ Network Design responses and network optimization
• Serve as Subject Matter Expert and provide planning and support for the field in network planning, implementation, and deployment activities
• Develop and research vendor and internal technical specifications to determine appropriate products, facilities and functionality
• Utilize knowledge of network transition strategies to determine optimal architecture design for new products and platforms
• Develop tools to enable sales engineers to design and optimize network responses
• Development of back office systems to store and report on network designs
•Analysis of network designs & economic impacts of different roadmap candidate features to build business cases
• Economic analysis of various networking architectural approaches and models, along with analysis of the applicability of emerging networking technologies
Qualification and Experience:
• Master’s degree in Engineering, Computer Science, or Physics is required, a PhD degree is preferred.
• 10+ years of relevant industry experience, 3+ years of experience with 3rd party network design or optimization tools highly desirable. Candidates with less than 10 years of experience will also be considered if their experience is very relevant.
• Working knowledge of carrier-class networking architecture and systems, including following technologies: WDM, IP/MPLS/GMPLS/Ethernet.
• Functional experience within either sales engineering or product management
• Experience writing scripts in Excel, Matlab, Perl etc
• Experience with commercial planning tools like OPNET, VPISystems, RSoft, Wandl, Cariden.
Technical Skills
1. Optical Link Budget Engineering
2. Modeling optical network performance including Non-Linear simulation and analysis
3. Capacity Planning optimization and knowledge of Layer 1 networking
4. Prior experience in Provisioning, Installation, Testing of other vendor DWDM systems is desirable
5. Familiarity with current standards and trends
6. Software experience with excellent scripting, Excel and SQL experience is a must
7. Familiarity of Relational Databases, Perl, C++, Java, Visual Basic, .net etc., is highly desirable

Qualified candidates for this position must have ability to work independently and with remote teams, ability to initiate and lead, possess strong problem definition and problem solving skills, demonstrate good judgment in addition they must have strong analytical skills, excellent written and communication skills, attention to detail and be able to rapidly prioritize and provide rapid responses to internal and external customers.
