The Role: VP, Controller

We’re seeking a seasoned and solution-oriented VP, Controller to lead our Accounting organization and bring clarity, control, and operational excellence to Hatch’s financial processes and infrastructure. This is a pivotal leadership role for someone who thrives on structure, loves process, is analytical and finds satisfaction in building resilient systems and processes that scale.

You’ll play a key role in shaping and scaling our accounting function while helping guide the company’s financial health with strong GAAP compliance, robust internal controls, and thoughtful decision-making. You’ll oversee our full spectrum of accounting operations—month-end close, compliance, system / process improvements, automation, and cash management—while managing both local and remote teams. This is a unique opportunity to build the backbone of a high-growth business that is on a mission to revolutionize the sleep industry, while working alongside cross-functional teams bringing business knowledge, expertise, and clarity to every interaction.

You’ll report to our Chief Financial Officer and help shape the future of Hatch’s financial operations.

What You’ll Do

📆 Within 3 Months:

  • Immerse yourself in Hatch’s sleep ecosystem, economic model and accounting close process
  • Develop relationships with all cross-functional team members and develop a basic understanding for all critical cycles (quote-to-cash, procure-to-pay, inventory life-cycle, payroll, equity awards, and reporting)
  • Help CFO smoothly transition responsibility for managing the Accounting function from an Interim Controller
  • Take ownership of month-end close, accounting policy documenting, balance sheet reconciliations, and internal controls
  • Lead and refine our month-end close process with improved timeliness while maintaining high quality
  • 🚀 Within 6 Months:
  • Prepare GAAP-compliant accounting policy documentation (including judgements / estimates) for all critical areas
  • Identify, document, and communicate opportunities to streamline key workflows (AR, AP, Rev Rec, Payroll, Inventory) without disrupting business momentum
  • Streamline accounting processes and enhance reporting capabilities
  • Optimize accounting infrastructure to support complex reporting needs across subscription and hardware revenue
  • Execute thoughtful allocation schematic to enable accurate unit economics reporting and financial analysis
  • Identify key internal controls and document / analyze with clarity for audit-readiness and scale

Ongoing Duties:

  • Build and mentor a high-performing accounting team, local and outsourced, creating room for scale and ownership
  • Own, manage and continuously improve the close process and annual audit documentation with the idea of planning for public company readiness
  • Apply and enforce revenue recognition policy and accounting across Hatch’s physical product and subscription businesses
  • Build and maintain strong cross-functional partnerships with operational teams including marketing, product, operations, people, content
  • Oversee subscriber activity tracking and revenue recognition for free and premium content offering
  • Oversee all accounting-related systems (NetSuite, FloQast, Bill.com, Carta and others)
  • Partner with external auditors, tax consultants and tax return filers, leading audit prep and income and sales tax compliance
  • Lead annual insurance renewals
  • Provide strategic input on contract structures and approvals
  • Identify business risk areas and recommend solutions
  • Establish Hatch as a model of accounting excellence, with clear, consistent processes and empowered team members
  • Support Investor and Board-level financial reporting
  • Be a trusted thought partner to the CFO and Executive team
  • Help CFO develop scalable longer term staffing plan
  • Scale accounting infrastructure to support international expansion ensuring compliance with GAAP, tax regulations, and cross-border operational needs

What You’ll Bring

  • 12+ years of progressive Accounting experience, with 5+ years in a Controller, Assistant Controller, or senior accounting leadership role
  • CPA required; public accounting background a plus
  • Deep fluency in US GAAP and reporting, including ASC 606, subscription and hardware revenue, inventory accounting, equity transactions, and reporting
  • Business model experience in ecommerce and recurring revenue businesses
  • Track record of successful ERP implementations and financial system integrations and reporting improvements
  • Experience navigating high-growth environments, cross-functional operations, and investor relations
  • Excellent project management, team leadership, and communication skills
  • A steady hand in complex situations, with the warmth and clarity to lead through change
