Reporting to the VP, Marketing, Communications and Distribution, the Director of Business Development is a senior decision maker with a proven history of leadership and sales performance. Responsible for the profitable growth of personal and commercial insurance in the Western Region.

The role leads a group of Business Development Managers across a national and regional territories, developing strong senior level business partnerships with our key distribution.  The Director of Business Development plays a key role in delivering the organizational strategy, setting the agenda for growth, and influencing outcomes through strong thought leadership

 

What will you do?

Manage Broker Relationships in Western Region

  • Proactive monitoring of service standards in underwriting, claims and billing. Troubleshooting, workflow enhancements and service improvement initiatives.
  • Optimize visibility of Gore Mutual, its products, services and propositions with all frontline staff in broker offices, supporting the growth of our broker brand.
  • Design and formulation of broker education and training strategy, calendar and content, working in partnership with Director Broker Performance & Learning.
  • Participation in the planning and execution of Gore events in the Western Region, and professionally represent Gore at relevant industry functions.
  • Lead the Western Region Business Development Managers including continuous management of pipeline and new business opportunity

Drive profitable growth across Western Region

  • Ensuring delivery of sales planning with brokers including clear expectations about strategy growth and profitability tactics, as well as regular touch points with brokers to assess performance against agreed plans and targets. This work may be led by local BDMs.
  • Define, drive and influence business mix coming from brokers, aligned with Gore’s underwriting strategy and financial plans.
  • Continuous monitoring of new business opportunities within the region including M&A, new broker appointments and growth agreements
  • Monitor underperforming brokers and portfolios and facilitate the formulation of corrective rehabilitation plans to return to profitability. This includes identifying targets, analysis of performance issues, collaboration with broker and Gore stakeholders, seeing project through to completion.
  • Understand, communicate and leverage Gore’s broker compensation programs including CPC, to maximize ongoing profitable growth brokers to make mutually beneficial decisions.

Lead strategic initiatives for Western Region

  • Monitor market dynamics, gather intelligence on competitor products, pricing and compensation, and communicate to Gore stakeholders in Head Office.
  • Review and assess opportunities across Western Region to identify new strategic initiatives for Gore.
  • Facilitation of broker engagements by colleagues to meet specific business goals, including senior management interactions, underwriting and claims visits, consultancy from HR, Finance and Marketing.

People Leadership

  • Lead and manage a team of broker development managers, providing guidance, support, and mentorship to foster professional growth and development
  • Set clear expectations and goals, regularly reviewing performance and providing constructive feedback.
  • Foster a positive and inclusive team culture, promoting collaboration and open communication
  • Identify training and development opportunities, optimizing team productivity and driving continuous improvement
  • Support, coach and develop the Western region leadership team across functional lines


What will you need?

10+ years industry experience that includes:

  • Experience managing and cultivating broker relationships
  • Insurance Industry experience (business development preferred)
  • Leadership and mentoring skills
  • Proactive self-starter
  • Strong financial acumen and negotiation skills
  • Developed analytical and problem-solving abilities
  • Open-minded approach to change with a solution-oriented mindset
  • Completed university degree or college diploma


Travel: this role is based in our Vancouver office (1780-505 Burrard St) with travel to our Ontario office as needed, estimated 6-8 times a year)
