As a Staff Software Engineer at Square Banking, you will lead technical excellence across five engineering teams, mentoring senior engineers, ensuring alignment with technical strategy, and addressing technical challenges by proactively managing implementation and technical debt.
The summary above was generated by AI

Since we opened our doors in 2009, the world of commerce has evolved immensely, and so has Square. After enabling anyone to take payments and never miss a sale, we saw sellers stymied by disparate, outmoded products and tools that wouldn't work together.
So we expanded into software and started building integrated, omnichannel solutions - to help sellers sell online, manage inventory, offer buy now, pay later functionality, book appointments, engage loyal buyers, and hire and pay staff. Across it all, we've embedded financial services tools at the point of sale, so merchants can access a business loan and manage their cash flow in one place. Afterpay furthers our goal to provide omnichannel tools that unlock meaningful value and growth, enabling sellers to capture the next generation shopper, increase order sizes, and compete at a larger scale.
Today, we are a partner to sellers of all sizes - large, enterprise-scale businesses with complex operations, sellers just starting, as well as merchants who began selling with Square and have grown larger over time. As our sellers grow, so do our solutions. There is a massive opportunity in front of us. We're building a significant, meaningful, and lasting business, and we are helping sellers worldwide do the same.
The Role
We're looking for a Staff Software Engineer to drive technical excellence across the Square Banking's Cash Flow organization whose purpose it to helps sellers manage their money-whether saving, spending, or understanding their cash flow-so they can run and grow their businesses with confidence.
As part of the backend product team, you'll collaborate closely with engineers of the Cash Flow organization as well as the web and mobile teams. You'll be responsible for setting technical direction and championing best practices across five engineering teams. In this role, you'll help teams adopt org-wide standards, make informed implementation decisions, and proactively tackle technical debt and blockers. Additionally, you'll work across organizational boundaries with other tech leads to ensure alignment with Square's broader technical strategy.
You Will

  • Provide technical leadership across five engineering teams, setting direction, championing best practices, and ensuring alignment with Square's broader technical strategy.
  • Mentor and coach senior engineers, helping them develop both technical and soft skills to navigate alignment challenges, manage complexity, and drive impact across teams.
  • Stay hands-on with implementation, identifying gaps in our technical stack, driving improvements, and proactively addressing technical debt and organizational bottlenecks.

You Have

  • 12+ years of industry experience, 2+ years of working at an organizational level
  • Strong backend engineering expertise, with a deep understanding of system design, scalability and reliability
  • Proven ability to work across multiple teams, disciplines and functions, balancing competing priorities and influencing technical direction.
