Ottawa-based defense technology startup Dominion Dynamics has raised $21 million CAD, or $15.2 million USD, in seed funding in a round led by Georgian with participation from Bessemer Venture Partners and the British Columbia Investment Corporation. The news marks one of the largest early-stage investments in the defense sector to date.

According to a news release, the company is developing an AI-powered “Arctic autonomy stack,” a software-defined platform that enables interoperable autonomous systems for both military and civilian use in extreme and remote environments, including the Arctic. The new funding will support the rollout of Auranet, a network of ruggedized sensors and autonomous systems for monitoring Canada’s northern frontier. The company also plans to accelerate development of its autonomous collaborative platform, including a drone designed to operate alongside fifth-generation fighter aircraft.

Dominion Dynamics has already completed field trials in Northern Ontario and is currently deployed in Yukon.

Alongside the funding, Dominion Dynamics also announced plans to increase its workforce nationwide, aiming to grow its engineering team up to fivefold in preparation for continued growth.
